The backyard is a haven for family fun during the summer. With barbecue grills blazing, families all over America head outdoors for a refreshing dip in the pool, a game of tag around the jungle gym, or a few rounds of H.O.R.S.E. on the backyard basketball court. The winter, however, is a different story. In Chicago, it can be difficult to convince children and adults alike to spend much time outside in the wintertime. Backyards take on an abandoned atmosphere since grills and pools are covered and the jungle gym and basketball court are probably covered in ice or snow. All hope for outdoor winter-based fun is not lost though; families who want to spend more time outdoors with friends and family are turning more and more to backyard ice skating rinks!
Backyard ice skating rinks encourage a sense of community among neighbors, friends and relatives. Instead of spending the winter months cooped up in front of the TV or video games console, kids can lace up their ice skates and get active outside. A backyard rink is an ideal attraction for holiday gatherings and parties. Not only will children have fun racing around the rink and practicing their hockey moves, but adults may also find great joy in the simple pleasure of ice skating as well.
For winter athletes, a backyard ice skating rink is indispensable. Several talented figure skaters and hockey players grew up with backyard rinks on which to practice and hone their skills. Public skating rinks often fill with crowds or are reserved for professional athletic practices and/or matches, which leaves local hockey teams and figure skaters without a place to practice. As the weather can be finicky, with some seasons warmer than others, it is not safe to ice skate on a frozen pond or lake, especially because, if you fall through the ice, you can get hypothermia or drown. However, in a properly maintained backyard rink, there is a reduced chance of this occurring. The water is frozen solid and only a few inches deep, whereas a pond is very deep but with a relatively thin surface of ice.
